We are very happy that Ms. Hina Jilani agreed to take over the patronage of our 9th International Student Week in Ilmenau. She was the former UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Human Rights Defenders. We hope to welcome her here in Ilmenau.

Vita

Hina Jilani was born to a politically active family in 1953 in Pakistan.  After her excellent graduation she established, together with her sister, the first all-women's law firm in Pakistan as well as the Women's Action Forum. As her reputation as a Human Rights activist and as a lawyer grew, she was made Advocate of the High Court in 1981 and 1982. She also set up the AGHS Legal Aid, the first free legal aid centre in Pakistan, in 1986. In the same year, she and her sister were amongst the founding members of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. Both became Advocates of the Pakistan Supreme Court in 1992, where they have continued their outstanding efforts for Human Rights improvements in the country. As an expert Hina Jilani worked for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). She is the Secretary General of the Human Rights Commission in Pakistan and until May 2008 she worked as the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on the situation of Human Rights Defenders. She is a practising lawyer in Lahore, Pakistan, specialized in human rights and was arrested and imprisoned several times for her political engagement. She received honorary doctorates and human rights awards in recognition of her work. In the year 2001 she was awarded the Millennium Peace Price.
